![]() ![]() In percussion parts it is common to write Tr (trill) instead of slashes under the notes (although slashes can be used). Here is an image from Bruckner's symphony 5, it is the violin 2 part: Note that among string players the term "tremolo" is applied in the meaning unmeasured tremolo, so it can happen that a composer write "tremolo" or "trem." in a string part in order to clarify that it should be unmeasured tremolo. ![]() Sometimes there are discussions among musicians whether to play unmeasured or measured if the tempo allows a measured version. Note the 4 slashes for the tremolo in the slow part, Adagio, and the 3 slashes in the next part, Allegro Molto: Here is an example from Dvorak's 9th symphony. I have seen tremolo with 4 slashes many times. You need more knowledge and/or information on this matter. Even at slow tempos, 99.9% of the time "as fast as possible" is what the composer wants. Yes, the 3 slashes can also mean 32nd notes, but that's rarely what is intended. Can you show me an example? It would certainly be non-standard. LarsPeterSchultz I have never seen more than 3 slashes. I need to answer with images which can not be done as a comment, besides there is also a need for this subject to be further sorted out. (covers both percussion and string usage of this made a comment in the comments section to his answer. "Bowed Tremolo: A single pitch is repeated as often as possible during the length of the written note by means of short, quick up- and -down-bow strokes." - Adler, The Study of Orchestration, 3rd ed., p.29 If you see this in drum notation, for instance a group of eighth notes where 1 note has 1 slash through its stem, then it's meant to be 2 sixteenth notes performed as a double stroke. When you get to 3 slashes, it becomes "as many as possible", basically, and is called unmeasured tremolo, or usually just tremolo. This is a notational shorthand which saves the composer work and makes the score easier to read for the performer. eighth note + 1 slash = 2 sixteenth notes.half note + 2 slashes = 8 sixteenth notes. If you see slashes through notes which already have beams/flags, then you're adding as many beams as slashes. They indicate to fill the note's duration using shorter notes with as many beams as there are slashes. You might also see a note with 1 or 2 slashes through its stem. They are part of the same musical gesture. ![]() The slur/tie is more of a gestural thing, showing that the roll goes all the way to the next note, leading into it. The note after the roll is played totally normally. If you see this in snare drum notation, then it would be called a buzz roll. This is the standard way to notate an unmeasured roll for percussion instruments (and tremolo for string instruments). The exact number of notes is not specified because it will depend on the tempo. 3 slashes on a note means to play as many notes as possible in the space of that one note duration. ![]()

"It does not, in fact, leave the ground, but it is a fun illusion," noted one tester. The wheels can turn sideways - that's the "anti-gravity" mode, because it makes it look as though the car is hovering. This fun little vehicle can do tricks, including wheelies, spins and drifts, like the moves featured in the video game. If any franchise deserves an RC race car, it's got to be Nintendo's Super Mario Kart. The fact that users raced earlier versions long enough to have the battery start to weaken is a testament to how robust - and how fun - this RC vehicle is, since it's getting use over a long period of time. But to some extent, gradual depletion is expected with any rechargeable battery (as we all know from life with our smartphones). We haven't been able to play with this new-for-2022 version long enough to determine if this car's battery will gradually weaken too. With previous versions of this Air Hogs RC car, users reported that the rechargeable battery got weaker over time and held for only 15 minutes or so - still a respectable amount of time in the RC vehicle universe, but worth noting. But our tests have shown that schoolkids, teens and adults love it. Toddlers may not have the patience to use all the features on this toy. The remote control's buttons are small and require some finger agility, so pay attention to the 4-and-up age rating. In fact, this RC car is a pick for the 2022 Good Housekeeping Best Toy Awards. Flippin' Frenzy is also able to do tricks, including wild spins. Either the blue side or the red side shows at any given time, and it can speed along either way. If the car hits an object and turns upside down, it just keeps going, which is great for uninterrupted racing. ![]() Our testing has shown that it's strong enough to be raced down a staircase or smashed into cabinets without damage to the toy or to a home. ![]() Our top picks:īecause of its soft wheels, the Flippin' Frenzy is ideal for indoor use, where it's unlikely to mark walls or scratch furniture, though you're welcome to use it outdoors too. Our list is practical for the young (there's even a first RC for toddlers!) - and for the young at heart. We place a premium on RC cars that can do fun tricks, like wheelies and spins, since that's a big part of their appeal. We check to see if an RC vehicle leaves marks on walls or if it's awkward to juice up a vehicle's rechargeable batteries. To that end, we've sent samples to homes to get real-life feedback and also tested many remote-controlled cars in our Lab. We want to be sure that an RC car is going to stay charged for more than just a few laps around the living room (we're looking for at least 15 minutes of go time) and that the controls are easy and intuitive. So if you find yourself browsing for holiday gifts, or you need a kid's birthday present, or you just want to treat the whole family to some fun, consider a zippy but sturdy RC vehicle.Īt the Good Housekeeping Institute, we've put hundreds of remote-controlled cars through their paces over the past 10 years, with family testers and our own engineers. Little kids, big kids and adults all like to make electronic remote-controlled cars and vehicles careen through the house or around a yard or park, testing how far and fast they'll go and whether they can overcome obstacles and turn on a dime. ![]() ![]() While Googling for details about the progression structure - Project Cars 3 has lousy documentation - I mainly found articles about how to level up fast and earn tons of money in the least amount of time. Frankly, it puts the progression in other racing games to shame. It’s about learning and experimenting, and making progress the entire time. It’s always about driving well, learning the track, and trying different cars. And it’s never just about winning a race. But the career mode slots all of the game’s progression systems into one of the most gratifying campaign structures you’ll find in any racing game. Custom events will add experience points to your profile and your car, and it will advance your accolades. Not that you’re limited to what’s available in the career mode! You can set up custom events with any track, event, and car. ![]() These objectives will give you some experience points, but you mainly do them to unlock more events in the career mode. You’re here to drive well, not just fastest. Since every event has three objectives, and oftentimes winning isn’t one of them, you might find yourself not even caring whether you win. Stay in the top ten for the duration of the race. Meet a speed goal for a particular section of the track. Instead, it’s just one of the many factors that goes into various progression tracks.Įach event has three career objectives, and sometimes one of the objectives is to win. But what’s remarkable about Project Cars 3 is that there’s no inherent reward for winning a race. ![]() These will eventually give you experience points after a certain number of wins, which are tracked for different cars and tracks. And there are tons of accolades for winning events. Some events have winning as an objective. Project Cars 3 won’t hold it against you. It doesn’t even matter if you came in last place. You get all these experience points regardless of whether you won the race. An accolades system will give you experience points when you hit thresholds for dozens of ongoing achievements, like driving from the cockpit view, driving certain tracks, putting mileage on your cars, buying upgrades, beating your own records, and so on. You get bonus experience points for driving without assists, or against harder AI difficulties. You get more experience points for clean passes, efficient cornering, and staying on the track. ![]() You get points for completing laps, for passing cars, for hitting high speeds, for drafting, and so on. As you race, green text announces various deeds or accomplishments, each adding experience points toward your tally for that race. The foundation for all this progression is experience points. There is not a wasted revolution of these cars’ wheels. Every time you drive, whether you’re winning, losing, practicing, or just exploring, you’re progressing something. Your car collection, your upgrades, your car’s level, your experience points, your accumulated career objectives, your accolades, your available races, the very tracks themselves. You’ll fill lots of different buckets with progress, which is a great hook. It’s a multi-faceted progression structure. But what’s new is that it’s all tied together by a progression system based on good driving. It has the events, physics, track variety, and expansive car catalogue of the previous Project Cars games. But what’s extraordinary about Project Cars 3 - and distinct from the previous games in the series - is that its entire structure is based on driving well. They might acknowledge it and sometimes even reward it. Plenty of race games concede that, yeah, sure, driving well is a thing. It’s ultimately about something too few racing games know how to express. Instead, it’s a game based on driving well. Project Cars 3 has plenty of speed, but that’s not what it’s about. It emphasizes precision, consistency, calculation, practice. In most videogames, you mash down the accelerator, feel the exhilaration, and have a win! But what’s distinct about Project Cars 3 - at least among consumer-friendly racing games - is that it downplays speed. It’s hardly surprising most racing videogames downplay this part. The important part is figuring out when and how much to slow down. But the important part is knowing when to relinquish speed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Many applications will have updaters or “helpers” that stay in contact with the developers servers for various reasons, such as checking for application updates. What’s interesting are the annoying third-party programs that occasionally send and receive data in the background. When you expand these out, you’ll notice they are phoning home to, which means you can usually ignore it. The bulk of the items here will be 100% normal system processes-stuff that Apple uses just to make macOS run smoothly. On the left-hand side, you can see an exhaustive list of all connections sending amounts of data large and small. Which programs are sending and receiving data? Or, it could be an application that you forgot you had and it’s working as designed. This may be a case of bloatware or it could be malware or a virus. That’s pretty much expected since I use it to sync my photos and videos from iCloud to Google Photos. Red flags in this section would be unfamiliar applications sending lots of data, or applications sending lots of data when you’re not using them. It also shows some statistics that highlight which connections are sending and receiving the most data.įor me, my Backup and Sync from Google is the major data hog. On the right-hand side is the summary which shows your overall data upload and download numbers. If it feels like you’re using up more data than you should on a monthly basis, Little Snitch can provide some insight. But it’d be more peculiar if your banking or financial application or website were sending data to North Korea at odd hours of the night. For example, it’s completely normal for Amazon Prime Video to be sending a bunch of data from Seattle since that’s where Amazon’s located. In most cases, this won’t mean much-servers are located all over the globe, and just because your computer sends a packet or two to Romania or Switzerland isn’t particularly suspicious.īut if you are noticing strange traffic from an unknown application or a high volume of data being sent to a particular location, then it might be worth looking into. The most prominent element of the Little Snitch window is the global map that shows the geographic location of where your data is going to and coming from. In this quick overview, I’ll show you how it works and what it does. Little Snitch is easy to use and free to try. ![]() ![]() ![]() It becomes painfully difficult at times, but that seems to be OK if you don’t get easily frustrated. And it looks really quite nice and sounds good, too. Regardless of some of these shortcomings, the rest of the game is quite well balanced and thought out, especially when it comes to gold (which you need a LOT of to get healing). No matter how successfully you may be in the game, monsters will still roam about (even if you defeat the evil wizard). The game world seems rather oblivious to your progress and achievements in the game. Your characters are who they are, as is the world around them. You might stumble across a few people with scripted lines, but there is no concept of dialog choices (a la Monkey Island) and really no role-playing. ![]() There is really no NPC (non-player character) interaction in the game. Until the party gains levels, wandering too far away from the AG can be fatal! And I’m talking about more than a single block away.Īnd frankly, even following this advice will require a bit of luck to survive in the beginning. You must have your party return to the Adventurers Guild (AG) to save the game. If you’re patient, getting good stats could realistically take hours if you’re really picky. If you don’t use the pre-made characters the game comes with, be prepared for a very long evening of re-rolling characters until you get the right stats. There are several races to choose from and several character classes as well - each bringing their own pros and cons to the table. The character development system of Bard’s Tale is, for the time, rather sophisticated. The key is to gut it out, because once you get beyond the city limits and find yourself in the (very) complex dungeons you’ll be having a really good time. Many hours of play are required to accomplish the building of your characters’ experience and levels. And character development is no easy task. You are going to need a ton of patience to train up your party. You have to explore the sewers and several other dungeons to defeat Mangar, and his hordes lie in wait everywhere. But it’s not going to be easy, and you aren’t only going to clear out the town. It is up to you to form a party of adventurers to set things right. With the power of his dark influence everywhere, all manner of monsters and evil folk are to be found almost everywhere you turn. In the game, the town of Skara Brae has been cursed by an evil wizard Mangar the Dark who cast a spell of Eternal Winter upon the town. But as you progress through the game his musical powers become integral to the game experience. In the early stages of the game, he almost feels more like a hindrance than a hero. More importantly, it was the first CRPG to feature a bard as a main character. The Bard’s Tale (Tales of the Unknown: Volume I), one of the grand-daddies of CRPGs, is a surprisingly satisfying and sophisticated CRPG in the vein of D&D without explicitly using the D&D license. ![]() ![]() ![]() Regarding the Proficiency and how it affects the Statting, there's a Material pts Reduction (Mat Reduction) Bonus that comes with "Customize Equipment" after the Tier4 Update.
